Co-circulation of the two influenza B lineages during 13 consecutive influenza surveillance seasons in Italy, 2004-2017

2019

AbstractBackgroundSince 1985, two antigenically distinct lineages of influenza B viruses (Victoria-like and Yamagata-like) have circulated globally. Trivalent seasonal influenza vaccines contain two circulating influenza A strains but a single B strain and thus provide limited immunity against circulating B strains of the lineage not included in the vaccine. In this study, we describe the characteristics of influenza B viruses that caused respiratory illness in the population in Italy over 13 consecutive seasons of virological surveillance, and the match between the predominant influenza B lineage and the vaccine B lineage, in each season.MethodsFrom 2004 to 2017, 26,886 laboratory-confirme…

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with better quality of life: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

2016

BACKGROUND The Mediterranean diet has positively influenced various medical conditions, but only a paucity of studies has considered the relation between the Mediterranean diet and quality of life (QOL) among people living in North America. OBJECTIVE We investigated whether a higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet (aMED) was associated with better QOL and decreased pain, stiffness, disability, and depression in a large cohort of North Americans from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. DESIGN aMED was evaluated through a validated Mediterranean diet score categorized into quintiles. Outcomes of interest were QOL [assessed with the 12-Item Short-Form Health Outcome Survey (SF-12)]; disability,…

Combined effects of the PNPLA3 rs738409, TM6SF2 rs58542926, and MBOAT7 rs641738 variants on NAFLD severity: a multicenter biopsy-based study.

2016

The PNPLA3 p.I148M, TM6SF2 p.E167K, and MBOAT7 rs641738 variants represent genetic risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here we investigate if these polymorphisms modulate both steatosis and fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. We recruited 515 patients with NAFLD (age 16–88 years, 280 female patients). Liver biopsies were performed in 320 patients. PCR-based assays were used to genotype the PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and MBOAT7 variants. Carriers of the PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 risk alleles showed increased serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine transaminase activities (P 0.05). The MBOAT7 variant was solely associated with increased fibrosis (P = 0.046). In the multivariate model, v…

miRNAs and sports: tracking training status and potentially confounding diagnoses.

2016

Background The dependency of miRNA abundance from physiological processes such as exercises remains partially understood. We set out to analyze the effect of physical exercises on miRNA profiles in blood and plasma of endurance and strength athletes in a systematic manner and correlated differentially abundant miRNAs in athletes to disease miRNAs biomarkers towards a better understanding of how physical exercise may confound disease diagnosis by miRNAs. Methods We profiled blood and plasma of 29 athletes before and after exercise. With four samples analyzed for each individual we analyzed 116 full miRNomes. The study set-up enabled paired analyses of individuals. Affected miRNAs were invest…

Elongated styloid process: An epidemiological study on digital panoramic radiographs

2017

Background The styloid process is a projecton of the temporal bone, its lenght is between 20 to 30 mm, when it is longer than 30 mm it is defined elongated styloid process. The aim of this study is an epidemiological evaluation of 1003 digital panoramic radiographs in an Italian population between 5 and 90 years old. Material and methods This is a retrospective analysis and the radiographs were selected from the Complex Operating Unit of Dentistry of Padua University Hospital database. The radiographs were performed using a Sirona Ortophos XG and the styloid process length was measured using the measuring tool of Sidexis Software. It was measured from the point where it left the temporal bo…

PCSK7 gene variation bridges atherogenic dyslipidemia with hepatic inflammation in NAFLD patients

2019

Dyslipidemia and altered iron metabolism are typical features of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 7 (PCSK7) gene variation has been associated with circulating lipids and liver damage during iron overload. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the PCSK7 rs236918 variant on NAFLDrelated traits in 1,801 individuals from the Liver Biopsy Cohort (LBC), 500,000 from the UK Biobank Cohort (UKBBC), and 4,580 from the Dallas Heart Study (DHS). The minor PCSK7 rs236918 C allele was associated with higher triglycerides, aminotransferases, and hepatic inflammation in the LBC (P < 0.05) and with hypercholesterolemia and liver disease …

CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PLASMA LIPIDS IN SUBJECTS WITH FAMILIAL COMBINED HYPOLIPIDEMIA: A POOLED ANALYSIS

2013

Background. Angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) regulates lipoprotein metabolism by modulating extracellular lipases. Loss-of function mutations in ANGPTL3 gene cause familial combined hypolipidemia (FHBL2). The mode of inheritance and hepatic and vascular consequences of FHBL2 have not been fully elucidated. To get further insights on these aspects, we re-evaluated the clinical and the biochemical characteristics of all reported cases of FHBL2. Methods and Results. One hundred fteen FHBL2 individuals carrying 13 different mutations in the ANGPTL3 gene (14 homozygotes, 8 compound heterozygotes and 93 heterozygotes) and 402 controls were considered. Carriers of 2 mutant alleles had undetectable pl…

Childhood abuse experiences, depression and dissociation symptoms in relation to suicide attempts and suicidal ideation

2021

This study aimed to examine associations between suicide attempts (SA), suicidal ideation (SI), depression, dissociative symptoms, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse, and to explore predictors of SA and SI, as well as possible mediating factors. We also aimed to examine support for a dissociative depression subgroup. Participating in this study were 342 adults, of these were 138 respondents with a diagnosis of depression (DG), and 204 respondents comprising a community sample (CS). Respondents completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale - Revised (CESD-R), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF), and Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Social factors related to the clinical severity of influenza cases in Spain during the A (H1N1) 2009 virus pandemic

2013

Abstract Background During the 2009 influenza pandemic, a change in the type of patients most often affected by influenza was observed. The objective of this study was to assess the role of individual and social determinants in hospitalizations due to influenza A (H1N1) 2009 infection. Methods We studied hospitalized patients (cases) and outpatients (controls) with confirmed influenza A (H1N1) 2009 infection. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect data. Variables that might be related to the hospitalization of influenza cases were compared by estimation of the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) and the variables entered into binomial logistic regression models. Resu…

Job satisfaction and quality of life among home care workers: a comparison of home care workers who are and who are not informal carers

2010

ABSTRACTBackground: Job satisfaction and quality of life among home care workers who serve simultaneously as informal carers for their own family members have seldom been explored. This study examined how this dual role influences job satisfaction and quality of life by comparing these dual carers with home care workers who do not provide informal care. The study also explored whether the factors related to job satisfaction and quality of life between these two groups were different.Method: Standardized self-administered questionnaires (Job Satisfaction Survey, the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) scales and various social demographic questions) were administered to the tw…
